I fed 75000 Nepali Sentences to a Machine Learning Algorithm and very satisfied with what it learned
I am working on a machine learning and artificial intelligence for Nepali Text in my spare time. I am originally from Nepal but have lived in US for about 15 years and am a Senior Software Engineer at one of the largest banks in US. The reason I gave these intro is to establish the fact that:
- I am a very skilled software engineer
- I love my origins, so even though I don’t live in Nepal, the Nepali language is in my blood.
So whenever I get some leisure time, I put my effort in coming up with something that involves Nepal or Nepali Language. This particular one is about Deep Learning of Nepali Language, by not me, but Computer.
So here is the story, I crawled over 200,000 Nepali webpages (Yes, just realized that there are two many out there). From a subset of those crawled text, I parsed the text, cleaned up the text and the split those text into sentences. Those sentences were fed to a deep learning algorithm tool that I had developed using DeepLearnign4j. After several tunings, the results of the machine learning started appearing better. In layman’s term, although the computer does not know the Nepali language, it goes through these sentences and tries to figure out relationships between the words. It set it to do that learning for 20 times, which means it read thorough 20*75,000 sentences = 1.5 million sentences trying to find relations between nearby words and starts learning the context. With each learning it become better. In doing that, it learned enough to find the close words.
Once the algorithm learned the sentences, I queried it to see what are top 100 closest words to आलु (potato), it can be any word, but I chose that word for this blog post because of its commonality. The result was surprisingly meaningful. It brought together other grains, foods, fruits and even related to the places where those food items would arrive from [e.g. भारत (India), स्याङ्जा (Syangja)]. It also found कालीमाटी (Kalimati) which is a place where vegetables are sold in Nepal. Several relations are to farming. Some to the weight measurement. But surprisingly very close relations.
